A factor to consider when purchasing a new wood floor is the strength or density of the wood. The Janka Scale is used to determine the density or hardness of wood and wood flooring. The larger the number on the scale the harder the flooring is. You can click on the following link to view the Janka Scale from Wikipedia.
The most common wood flooring used in the U.S. is red oak. This is the standard by which most floors are judged. It is reasonably priced and is very strong. As for native species (to the U.S.), if you look at oak on the scale, you will see that ash and birch are very similar in strength, while maple and hickory are even stronger. The softwoods like pine and fir are noticeably less dense and therefore more susceptible to wear.
The non-native or exotic species, such as Brazilian walnut (Ipe) and Brazilian cherry (Jatoba), are extremely dense with very high ratings on the scale, but should not be viewed as a necessity. The native species are quite strong and will withstand everyday use with ease.
In addition to strength, there are other factors to consider when installing a new wood floor, such as the obvious - cost and aesthetics - what works best for your budget and in your home. Also, stability of the wood is a factor. The amount of moisture your home is susceptible to can play a major role as well.
We can help you with all of these questions, so we hope you will give us the opportunity to assist you!
